Help, an ill employee! Besides this being very unpleasant, it can have serious financial consequences. Dutch employee organisation ArboNed has calculated that one employee absent day is costing, on average, 250 euros. This is without calculating the lower productivity and the extra pressure on your other employees!
A cold or a mountain bike accident, those are thing that you, as an employer cannot prevent, those things happen. But 25 percent of long term absenteeism is due to burn-out related symptoms. Let’s say that your employee is absent for a month after experiencing stress at work, that could cost you around 5.000 euros. Unfortunately, the average burn-out does not last for 1 month, but for 294 working days on average.
Besides serious situations as a burn-out, it is very unpleasant if an employee is absent for a day or a week. This also causes extra pressure on the other employees who have to fill this hole. Research has showed that engaged employees call in sick less because they feel more responsible towards the organisation and their colleagues.
Let say you have a company of 30 employees and all your employees call in sick 1 day less, a year, then this could result in 7.000 euros or more!
It is difficult to invest in engaged employees because it is intangible and it does not deliver cash in hand right away. But this calculation means that it definitely can be profitable! And then I do not even mention the increate in productivity and the reduced employee retention. (The numbers used are from Dutch sources and based on a Dutch data and Dutch employees)
