Sustainable careers is a term which is often associated with older and outgoing employees. As an organisation you could use sustainable careers for all your employees!
Sustainable careers are careers which are managed with the idea in mind to keep the employee healthy, productive and employable. At right this time, but also throughout their whole career.
The fact that an employee has different needs within different phases of their career is something which also shows within my research. While it is very logical that a starting employee of 22 years old has different needs and priorities compared to an outgoing employee of 63, the reality is often that organisation have one strategy, for all employees.
By offering employees, in different phases of their career, different opportunities and management styles, you will play into their needs, at that time in their lives. By meeting that specific need, you will create a healthier, more engagement and sustainable work life. My research shows that for example a starting employee has the need for a safe team, a supervisor who is approachable and development possibilities while an employee within the last ten years of their career is more focussed on mentoring and guiding colleagues.
Within organisations it can be complex to offer all employees an individual HR policy. However, dividing all the employees into different categories (starting, 3 to 15 years of experience, 16 to 25 years of experience and last 10 years of career, for example) will make it easier for you, to reach a specific target group. We already do this with our customers, so why not with our own employees?starter, 3 tot 15 jaar ervaring, 16 tot 25 jaar ervaring, laatste 10 jaar van carrière, als voorbeeld) wordt het toch makkelijker om een specifieke doelgroep te bereiken. We doen dit al met klanten dus waarom niet met onze eigen medewerkers?
